We depend on our brain and nervous system to think, move and function every day. When diseases or injuries affect these crucial systems, it can have serious effects on our quality of life. That’s why the neurologists and neuroscience specialists at HealthONE hospitals specialize in diagnosing, treating and managing diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and movement disorders.
Our teams work together to offer comprehensive care that’s patient-centered, addressing your physical, emotional and spiritual needs throughout the treatment process.
Your care begins with your primary care doctor or a specialist such as a neurologist who has been trained to diagnose and medically treat neurological conditions. A neurologist will take a detailed history of your symptoms and perform an examination to find the source of your problem. This may include blood, urine and other fluid tests, as well as imaging tests of the head, spine, neck and muscles.
The neurologist can then make a diagnosis and prescribe medications or other therapies to help manage your condition. If a diagnosis isn’t immediately clear, your neurologist can order additional testing to help pinpoint the cause of your symptoms. This can include electroencephalography (EEG), a test that measures the electrical activity in your brain, to evaluate seizures, infections and brain injury; a polysomnogram to record your sleep patterns, to identify sleep disorders like insomnia; single-photon emission computed tomography (PET) or positron emission tomography to assess for tumors, infections and herniated disks; and a spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan to detect herniated discs and spinal fractures.
If you need surgery, your neurologist will refer you to a neurosurgeon, who has been trained to surgically treat diseases of the spine, brain and nerves. These doctors can perform a variety of procedures, including spinal fusion to stabilize the spine; remove brain tumors; relieve cranial pressure caused by herniated disks or degenerative spine disease; and correct vascular malformations.
Some neurological conditions can cause pain or loss of muscle movement, balance and memory. You can receive support through physiotherapy, which helps restore strength and motion; occupational therapy to teach you new ways to accomplish daily activities; and speech and language therapy to overcome communication challenges. Did you know that you can also get such service from Neurologist Universal Neurological Care?
We’re dedicated to improving your quality of life through research and innovation in neurosciences. In partnership with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, our experts participate in both multicenter and single-center clinical trials that explore novel treatments for conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, movement disorders and more.
When you choose to have your neurology care at a HealthONE hospital, you can also take advantage of integrated rehabilitation services. We have the first and only MS Achievement Center in North America that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities (CARF) and a complete continuum of neurologic care, from the hospital to outpatient neurorehabilitation programs. Our hospitals also host the only two Spine Centers of Excellence north of the Bay Area.
